I'm thinking a bit more overhead protection would have been a good idea.

I'm not seeing the gun, unless it is facing the other way and this is the back.
Real men measure once and cut.

Correct Bob gun is pictured from behind, seems they have covered the breech, one of the recoil spades can be seen left under the bags the Rt one is on the left of the GI the unlimbering handle can be clearly seen.
