Enfield that is unknown to me

Hi All,

I was at a local gun store today looking for something to fix and saw this Enfield on the rack and didn't know what I was looking at.
One thing I saw on the receiver was "U.S. Property " and ser# 8C8399, 5No4m, -1842-, Hollow bolt handle, and the stock is a "bubba" but the bore looked great....worth a re wood.

Lots been done to that poor rifle. It's been drilled and tapped for a mount on the barrel ring and a set of side mounts too. Looks like the reinforcing bolt has been removed at the rear of the forestock. If you're thinking about trying to return this one to military look again, you have more work and expense than if you bought one already complete. The side marking is a square "S" for Savage arms and then the No.4 Mk1 or 2...not a "5".

There was really nothing there that said "Buy Me" after I got home and got a good look at the pics.
I had never run into the Savage model before.

The real rub is that it is a fairly early original Savage Mk1 as opposed to a Mk1/1. Shame!
