The "Skinny" on the Walther P1/P38 purchase...
Thanks to the info/links that members replied, I have pretty much figured out what I have.
The only thing missing is the frame manufacture date.
As stated in the first post, it looks like it was not used very much.
The slide, dated 4/81 was MADE in April, 1981. The 199 stamped in a different size/style corresponding to the last 3 numbers on the FRAME...083199 was applied to the slide, after a rebuild.
The W 5.90 was stamped on the right side of the alloy FRAME as the time of the rebuild. May, 1990.
It is a "Fat " slide, with the internals of the frame being inspected/replaced, and needing no HEX pin to reinforce, because of "Non Use".
The "locking block" assembly was upgraded. A new barrel was installed, and it was issued to the Bundeswehr...where, it could have sat at an arsenal.
It , according to the various P-38 Forums, was imported by CAI, from Ukrainia (???). Huh?
I took it to the "woods" of Alabama yesterday. Ran 50 rds of Aguila 9mm Luger Ammo 115 Grain Full Metal Jacket, 50 rds of Remington UMC 9mm 115 Grain, and, just for a kicker, 16 rds of Remington Ultimate Defense, 9mm Luger, BJHP, 124 Grain.
It "ate" everything I fed it.
Windage was "spot on" at 25 yards. Elevation was as expected. Had to aim low to "kill" a beer can/water bottle. I "killed" a 12 pack. Then, a few gallon milk jugs...
Trigger on double action was good. Trigger on single action was smooth. You know where it's going to break every time.
It's NOT my CCW gun, but loaded with the Remington Ultimate Defense rounds...it's a nightstand gun.
All I need to do is keep the repeated "hot" loads out of it.
I am happy...

I liked them too, easy to shoot and shot just fine. I used standard stuff and had no problems either. Nice gun...
