Bayonet bands in PTO and ETO
This photo reported to be taken in PTO, 1945. Caption reads: dense fog shrouded the island of Iwo Jima forcing this B-29 to ditch in the ocean. The B-29 was shot up over Tokyo and had come back with badly-wounded men on board.

I stumbled on to this thread while looking for barrel band part numbers on a AK forum.
Some pretty cool pictures posted by a member there.

Charlie, I believe there's a thread including this photo somewhere here on our Milsurps Forum, also. A pretty good discussion on it, if I remember correctly.

Hi Bob.
This picture looked familiar to me also.
Do recall some debates.
I couldn't/can't copy the other pics........... thus the link.
Thought the Bayo band in the ETO pic was interesting, just couldn't copy and paste it.

Yes, there was an entire thread including the usual arguments around this picture. That was about three years back...

No US ground forces ever set foot in Italy
when it was part of the ETO. Rather, Italy was in the MTO (which had earlier been NATO).

This pic is from a book I have on Iwo Jima. Is that a Type III barrel band?

Doesn't really matter, it gives us a new train of thought to run with it seems...

Too far to the rear...a bayonet lug appears almost center of that part of the barrel.

At least one ARMY unit with carbines that had lugs is known to have been in Okinawa before the end of the war. Another one may have been at IWO around the same time. I've only seen one other picture that showed a lug equipped carbine take during the war. I don't believe very many made it to combat zones before the war ended.
When they tell you to behave, they always forget to specify whether to behave well or badly!
