Can you identify my new Carcano?
I have a few questions. Can someone help me identify the model, year this rifle was made, and what "f.a.g. 40" means? (Ive been a little self conscious about that marking on the stock).
Also can someone explain why so many cavalry carbines are missing the spike bayonet? You never see SKSs missing their bayonets so why are they gone on Carcanos?
(pics below)
Thanks

The year would be 1940 and the rifle was made at the Italian Armory Gardone (F.A.G.). The missing bayonet can be for a number of reasons. Someone just didn't like it or because they allow kids to play with it they removed the bayonet. The other could have been like some of the SKS's imported. They had their bayonets removed by order of President Billy boy Clinton to be able to not be classified as assault rifles.

Bayonets removed on Carcanos have nothing to do with presidential orders. It has everything to do with the people using them. Much like how many SKS have had there bayonets removed it is the same for the Carcano cavalry carbines.
The model would be a M38 Cavalry Carbine made at Gardone in 1940 (*** meaning Fabbrica d'Army Gardone). I tried to find the exact serial number range but it doesn't fit within the charts I have on my Carcano book (closest serial number for Gardone being a standard M38 1940 production not a cavalry carbine).

That may well be BUT by order of pants down Clinton there was a large shipment of SKS rifles that had to have their bayonets removed to be able to get them into the country. I was in a dealers when his cases of SKS carbines came in and in each case the Chinese SKS bayonets were gone. The owner cursed slick Willy day in and day out for it. The saving grace was that the bayonets were then put up for sale real cheap and may owners of the SKS's bought them from dealers. The one I knew even offered a free bayonet with the rifle but you had to put it on yourself. I never said that the Carcano bayonets were removed by a presidential order. Only the SKS's. BUT many that were imported after 1968 may have faced similar problems with the customs as there was a lot of confusion at first as to what the gun control act of 1968 said and did.
