Finally got myself a Mosin...

1944 Izhevsk 91/30, She's mot much to look at right now, but the rifling looks really good, bluing is passable, and besides the stock, is unaltered. And I'm already scheming on what to replace the stock with... Leaning towards an original laminate, if I can find one.

My initial plan was to cut er' down and build a M1938 clone, but, as nice as the barrel is, I just can't bring myself to do it.

I hope to make a trip to the woods sometime soon and see how she shoots... But after I find a stock, I dunno if I can risk being seen in public with it as is.

Yes, please get some correct clothes on that beast. I feel bad for it lol. Bet you got it really cheap though. Some new wood and two barrel bands and you'll be good to go

Now that's so much better! Even with the rubber bands holding the handguard on.

The stock is for an m39, you can definitely tell it was made for a heavier barrel, but it fits without much trouble. I REALLY like the feel of the stock, its much wider than anything I'm used to. Fills the hand quite nicely, and the semi-pistol grip is very nice, can't wait to shoot it!

I might have one that is the correct year for that rifle. I only collect Izhevsk's. If not I can give you some sources. I also know of a beautiful stock that is Pre-WWII with screw echelons at a local gun store he's selling for $40.00, I might be able to talk him down to $30/$35 it looks like this one, it doesn't have a handguard though Surplus Russian Army Mosin Nagant 91/30 Rifle Pre-War Stock Handguard Set | eBay

I like my 91/30s more then my M44. It's more accurate and enjoyable to shoot. Yup, I shoot with iron sights. Fireballs from a shorter barrel (like from an M44) can be distracting. Personal choice, that's me.

I had a counter bore barreled 91/30 that I was considering cutting the barrel on. After thinking long and hard about the project The tools needed and a new front sight arrangement. I just ended up selling the rifle and buying an M44.

But, it's your time and money. Enjoy your decision.

Thanks gents, I finally made it out to the woods and put about 40 rounds through this rifle, and with zero bedding or accurizing, she's more accurate than the guy pulling the trigger! (aka, me) I was only shooting at about 30 yards, but I got groupings within 2". I'll bet with some better quality ammo and better eyesight, those numbers could be improved apon significantly.

@usabaker I'll keep that stock in mind, right now I'm pretty happy with my m39 stock

I did have one problem though, the rounds like to stick in the chamber. Once they’re free I noticed a small shiny spot on the case, about 1/8-3/16 inch past the rim. And if I try and rechamber a spent case it will gouge the casing in that same spot and will prevent the bolt from locking. I think there’s a burr in the chamber, but I figured I should consult the experts before I get in there with a file. Anyone experienced anything like this with a mosin before?

Yes, I've had that problem too. Shiny spot, looks like a gouge on the cases just above the rim. I had trouble opening the bolt. There were times when I had to use a 2x4 to slap that bolt handle open.

How I solved it......

I just got an old cleaning rod section and screwed on one of those plastic tips that looks like the eye of a needle. Insert a strip of sandpaper through the eye. Start with whatever grit you feel comfortable with. I started at 320 and got finer as the process progressed. If you don't want to go with sandpaper.....you could use a section of shotgun rod and a 20 ga. bore brush w/ a bit of JB bore non-embedding compound on it. Chuck it up in your portable elec. drill and run it in and out of the chamber a couple of times. Check your work frequently. There is probably a YouTube video of the process. Search words: "Mosin Nagant sticky bolt"

I also had a problem with fired cases not being able to go back into the chamber. I figured that steel cased ammo is only meant to be fired once and the steel cases at that point are trash. So, forgetabouit. There is no need to fret over the fired cases not being able to go back into the chamber.
