Looks to me like they peened to make the barrel tighten up sooner to line up the marks

gunsmiths advise that take-off carbine barrels usually CANNOT be used due to headspace issues. There are usually a bunch of take-offs (often mutilated) available on Gunbroker. I guess some folks will do whatever it takes to avoid buying a new barrel.

The way we used to give a bit of extra crush factor was to tap the edge of the barrel ring in front of the threads and then it crushed back to shape when assembled. Just a touch...
In some places, barrels just aren't available, you have to work with what you have.

I have seen that kind of peening on the rear face of the collar on the barrel extension of AR 15 barrels. Makes sense

Center punching is not the correct method to tighten an over-turning barrel. browningautorifle
has outlined the correct and commonly used method which is perfectly acceptable in most circumstances. Gentle and even peening of the edge will displace enough metal to achieve a very tight fit without any obvious damage.

Head space in a carbine is not hard to fix if one knows what they are doing. In fact many times USGI barrels will just screw on and have acceptable head space.

They are after all straight(ish) chamber, this one's a bit forgiving...
