It's No Enfield
Uncovered this indent on a Webley Mk VI last week or so and put the photo up in the "Weapons of the British
Commonwealth" forum at gunboards. There have been 500+ views of that thread, so maybe all of you have seen it?

I had this pistol for 21 years before I took the grip plate off.
Anyway, this would seem to be related to the contract noted in Skennerton
's "British Small Arms of World War 2"---page 24. The listing runs like this: "19. 6.40 Pistol, rev. No. 1 Mk VI, repair Webley & Scott 7,622".
So, if you haven't seen it, now you have. If you've got it on one of your Webleys, show it off. If you know of a reference book that mentions it, let us know, please.
There might be another 7,621 Mk VIs marked like this and hopefully they weren't all sent to the Leeds Pistol Demilling Smelter.

(What do you reckon the "R I" stands for? Repair, Inspection?)
