1915 Wilkinson Pattern 1907 Bayonet Refurb
I recently purchased this bayonet for what I think to be a good price and want to give it a sprucing up to go with my recently cleaned up 1912 Sht. LE.
Questions - would the metalwork on the scabbard be painted black or blued?
Would the leather (which is in good shape) be dyed black or painted black?
Handle and pommel - would this area of the bayonet be painted black or blued?
Blade - would it be partially or totally blued or no treatment at all.
Thanks for any and all advice on this project.
Hugh

The bayonet should have been blue completely, doubt it made it past refurb for WW2 without actually being parkerized. The scabbard would be died black if CDN, UK or Brown if Aussie... The handle would be blue or parkerized as well, handle scales were likely walnut but could have been several types of natural wood, no paint.

Present Condition of Bayonet
This is the shape that it's in now. The grips are a bit beat up but there is an inspector's mark on one of them (on the outside surface) so I'll keep them as they are. They got a coat of boiled linseed oil to freshen them up. Hopefully the pictures make it to this reply.

This one looks like most you'll see, no better or worse. Quite presentable as is. You have the right idea, do little. They command about $100 +/- CDN around here right now, even in that shape. Not sure, the RE could be Remington? Someone will tell us for sure. The rest are normal marks and Sanderson is common. Made in 1917...

Oops BAR its a Wilkinson Pall Mall 8 '17..... my take on that bayonet if you have the scales just very fine ORDINARY steel wool 0000 RLO/Min Turps mix 60/40 it will recconstitute the wood at the same time cleaning it go with the grain wiping off the dirt & carry on....the bayonet looks pretty good use STAINLESS steel wool or pot scourer (Not a soaped one) WD40 or RP 7 give the Scourer/SW a spray and scrub the bayonet wiping off the grime & rust the STAINLESS steel wool will not harm the blueing or the finish......oil with Balistol. DO NOT I repeat DO NOT use ordinary steel wool on the bayonet itself as you will strip the finish off the bayonet faster than Mae West's B**B's busted bra straps.......!
The scabbard I just give mine drinks of Balistol to keep them supple others may use different stuff.
When you place the bayonet into the scabbard it must be in the vertical plane as if you do it horizontally if the scabbard sags then your dragging the point along the inside of the scabbard do that enough times you'll either wear through the scabbard or peel off enough so the bayonet will not fit snugly in.

Moving forward
Thanks for the tip Cinders. I don't have any SS wool but I do have good results using a brass "Curly Kate" pot scrubber.

Correct, don't know how I managed that one...guess I looked sideways. Makes it a bit more desirable to some...
