Rifle No4 with front-end Ladder sight

Today I came across a Fazakerley No4 MkII, modified with Parker Hale sights, BUT with a front-end mounted rear ladder sight!
This rear sight is Rifle No1 MkIII or MkIII* styled.
Can anyone identify or explain this apparent anomaly?
I thought it might have been an early model "trials No4" from the late 1930s or early 1940s but this is a 1950s model!
