There are E serial numbered carbines. Whether only ten are known, that I'm not sure of. I've seen a guy some years back who had two with consecutive serial numbers. I think E-146 and E-147.
Strange there wasn't a picture of the serial number in his photo group, that's what adds all it's value.

Is it just me or does the stock look to have some kind of shiny weird finish to it? Maybe because it's supposed to be a presentation piece?

Shiny to look pretty, Odd that it's a SE Overton stock, marked IO in the slingwell, like those made for Inland, unless there's more markings in there covered by the sling.
Why do they offer up carbines like this with so few pictures?

With the lack of detail pictures, I wouldn't bid $450 for it. It could be a faked mix-master for all we can see. Yes there were E series carbines, but its going to take more than those nearly worthless photos to convince me that it is legitimate.
When they tell you to behave, they always forget to specify whether to behave well or badly!

The Type III band was approved along with the M4 bayonet in April/May 1944 and went into production. The 4th block, serial number: 6,099,689 - 6,199,688 estimated to be March, 1944 - April 1944 might have had them from the factory.
If as Marcus suggested these were made as or after the contract was over they would have been assembled with whatever was left over. It is possible the barrel was lying around. My guess is that it has been put together, IE the leaf sight.
