I wonder if it's loaded with Korean War era ball powder WC-852 that would cause damage to Garand
barrels by expanding the barrels in the chamber shoulder and neck area. This barrel damage is called "ringing". I think most (or at least a lot) of the ammo issued at the time was AP ammo and the powder used was damaging the rifles.

You'll probably get more money out of it if you break it down, unless you can find someone who collects case lots.
Why not trade it at a favourable ratio for ball so you can shoot more?

Howdy John Coleman, it seems I have accumulated an 8 lb container of this 852 propellant somewhere in the past. It was sold by Jeff Bartlett of GI Brass and came with load data equivilant to IMR-4831's burn rate. I have seen other lots with Hodgdon's H-450 data attached at shows in the past. Do you have a link with the history of this propellant or anything to educate me further before I use this in bolt gun loading?
Many Thanks for your time.

There were "fast" lots and "slow" lots of WC-852. The fast lots were certified for 30-06 and it was sold as surplus powder by Hodgdion years ago as the original H-380 but was closer to current H-414. there are surplus powder called "WC-852 slow" and WC-852 fast" . I have heard the "slow" lots might be slower than H-414 and almost as slow as H-450. It's not suppose to be that slow but it might be. I would first treat it as a bit faster. It was position sensitive in 30-06 and caused the ringing problem. There was another lot of "good" ball powder for M-2 30-06 in 1972.
