Recommendation: Take-down Manual for the Yugo M48A Mauser

Hi Folks, I may have mentioned this but I'm giving my Yugo M48A to my daughter as a promotion to Staff Sargent gift. Since she lives in Texas and I live in the Peoples Republic of Communist Californa I won't be there to help her with this rifle if she needs it.

Does anyone have any recommendations on which M48 Takedown manual I should get her? I don't own any and have never looked at them.

Came across your post and thought I might was well contribute, since no one else has.

Despite the abundance of access to data and information, there seems to be a distinct lack of knowledge getting around nowadays. I guess it's because people have given up being curious about things since Google took their natural curiosity out of them and sold it to advertisers.

I'm not ancient, by any means. I started shooting when I was about 14 (late starter as I'd moved to the city) and in the 80's as I was growing up as a teen, there wasn't much information available. Certainly no interwebs, Milsurps, the other web chat site, or Google. Eventually found a bible of parts and some advice on taking bolt actions down in Bolt Action Rifles by Frank de Haas. Turns out, I really only needed this for my Mauser Verguiro. Even figured out how to dismantle my Garand without any go-by...

Curiosity. Some basic tools. And patience.

That's about all you need to work out how a Service Rifle is put together and taken apart.

It took me some time, but realised that they were meant for use by soldiers. And, well... let's say that training, pressure, varying skill levels, meant that the simpler the machine could be made, the better.

I'm sure your daughter will work out how to workshop strip and reassemble (correctly) the '98 in a matter of minutes. They're all the same, but a little different.

Relax. She's been indoctrinated by a rigid system with unambiguous instructions long enough now, she'll make some well considered judgement (based on experience) in no time.

And get it right...

Thanks for the thoughts on what I should get her. You are right, I raised her around firearms and have had her help me strip and clean them and along with her Army training, I'm sure you are right - she "will work out how to workshop strip and reassemble (correctly) the '98 in a matter of minutes."

I guess I just wanted to give her everything she could need. I've even outfitted her with cleaning supplies for 8mm.

My first reaction was a 98 is a 98 is a 98. On reflection there must be small differences between the various manufacturers and models, but not major.
Next reaction was that just about any 98 manual should be sufficient, but on reflection as above ...
Last reaction, the most important one. She's a soldier and will probably strip it down blindfolded in the dark without knowing what it is. And then reassemble faultlessly.

She's a soldier and will probably strip it down blindfolded in the dark without knowing what it is. And then reassemble faultlessly.

That and she's been shooting and cleaning rifles her whole life. Her first time at rifle live-fire qualifications the NCOs were shocked at her shooting abilities; she shot expert 38 of 40 targets. The only thing they gig' ed her on was her standing position. She held her elbow up level with her shoulder the way we did in the military during the 1970/80's, that's how I taught her so my fault, they want her elbow tucked in.
