CMP M1 Garand

Now that the CMP is starting to sell some Garands again, I'm thinking about buying one. I'm a little leery of the "receiver pitted above the wood line" thing. The rifle will be a shooter & I don't mind some pitting, but I don't want to end up with a beater. Anyone familiar with what I can expect????

I'd recommend reviewing comments on the CMP forums regarding recent CMP service grades and realize that generally only the better CMP offerings are posted by participants.

I purchased two service grades in August and, given the condition of the metal and wood, a few years ago they would have been field grade. Likely SG due to low ME and TE.

You may want to monitor the CMP forums for feedback on the new CMP Special Rack Grade.

Attached are photos of the service grade I picked up at the store on Saturday. The vast majority of the service grades are nice but come with new stock sets. I purchased a service grade last December. It came in as a drab 1956 SA but with good throat and barrel measurements. Cleaned up extremely well (a little Hoppes on the stock followed by a few hand rubbed coats of RLO). All of the internal parts are consistent with a 1956 built rifle. It shoots great and I have been able to introduce some new shooters to a great piece of history with it. I would go with the service grade. I think they mention the "pitting" just in case one sneaks through or else the Phillipine returns are being offered and based on the pictures and stories, they appeared to have pitting issues. I'm actually contemplating getting a rack grade also since many of them appear to have some great history in them.

A little pitting doesn't bother me as much as the heel markings being sandblasted to Very Faint and reparked.

I got a service grade M1 around this time last year and this is what I received. It came with a wonderful USGI birch stock set. I was actually wanting a birch sock set and with my luck I got a very nice one. The rifle is a SA 4.3 million. But I can't remember the TE/ME and I am currently in the process of a move so my paperwork is not available right now.
