New to forum - Picked up No4 MKI* - Savage built

Hello, My first post here. I picked up a decent No4 MK1* Saturday. I inherited a sporterized Enfield 20 years ago from my Dad. He had done it in the 60s long before they were deemed collectible. It’s a great shooter and quite accurate. I’ve casually looked for a NON sporterized Lee Enfield for a little while and came across one Saturday. It’s far from perfect and somebody appears to have stripped and sanded the butt stock. I was told the barrel had been replaced at some point but the other numbers seem to match. It’s a 99C US Property stamped. Given the butt stock looking much different than the rest of the stock, I’m not sure where to go with the finish. I would have preferred that it hadn’t have been stripped. Not sure if everything else is correct for the model yet. I’m not a collector at all but a shooter, however I would like to be generally correct.

Needs a couple things...I wonder what the dark splotches in the wood are?

I have seen dark splotching like that from salt water on wood stocks. After it comes in contact with metal it leaves a residue.

Any thoughts on removing the dark marks? I don’t believe it is dirt or cosmoline but a saltwater reaction is interesting, something I never would have guessed.

What pieces are missing? Any help would be greatly appreciated as I’m trying to educate myself quickly.

Magazine, rear sling swivel and two screws as far as I can see...yes, the butt has had some sanding as the butt plate usually sits deeper in the wood. You have some clean up there anyway so we'll see what happens there.

And please if your going to strip it first and always first remove the fore woods first upper and lower then the butt always tap the top (Alternate sides) rear of the bottom forewood down as well to remove it from the draws on the bottom of the receiver if you pull it down from the muzzle end first to remove it you'll do damage to the draws area. Read up on the articles on removing the furniture.

Also with the mag make sure its for a No.4 as the MKIII mag will not fit the rifle you have as the rib on the back of the No.4 mag does not go full length have a look at pics of them both so you know which one to get all the other stuff is easy all the screws go in from the left-right

Thanks for the heads up on the disassembly. I have the mag for it, it’s just not in the picture. I’m experimenting with a few things on one of the smaller and conspicuous black stains
