What can you tell me about this rifle?

My grandpa gave me this Springfield 1903 a few days ago and I'm trying to learn more about it. What can you tell me? Serial number is 1032433. 1913 is stamped in the wood. Anything helps. Thanks!

If I'm reading the serial number correctly, you have a Springfield Research Service ( SRS ) "hit".

1032433 01/10/31 USMC - HAITI

After the USMC didn't need it any longer, someone made a target rifle out of it. What is the barrel date ( located just behind the front sight )?

All I could find was an "S" and an "A" and under that "6-"
I think there was probably more but it was worn off or something.

Having an SRS hit is very cool. I have a couple documented sporters but nothing military. That would definitely be worth getting a letter on!

What ever came after the 6 would have been the year.

If you are friends with any police officers you could get their forensics to x-ray the front area when metal is stamped it does go into the structure, thats how the police tracked me down when they found what was left of my Z900 motor cycle that was stolen recovering the motor from lake Monger in Perth 3 years later.
The serial No. had been ground off but they x-rayed it and the serial No.s were there impregnated into the structure of the metal the motor was only the cases with internals plus 4 pistons poking out the top threw the whole lot out in 1979 stupid thing is nowdays those cases would be worth a few $'s.

The rear sight collar had been removed with this rifle and the longer 03A3 handguard has been fitted, but without the handguard retaining ring. The early single bolt stock dating to 1913 of course is not original to this rifle either. I concur this USMC rifle most possibly post service has found its way into civilian hands where the original sights were (partially) removed and a long slide Lyman 48 rear sight was fitted and the stock was replaced.

Could you possibly post a few more pictures of the rifle? I wonder if the rifle features the "Hatcher's Hole" on the right side of the receiver. Also the front sight blade looks to be thicker. Based on the SA code and the condition of the barrel I'd suppose the barrel is still the rifles original barrel. The year therefore could be (19)19.

Congrats very nice rifle. SRS hits to the USMC are downright rare.
