Fake Grenade?

Hello, I have a grenade that appears to be a fake Mk.2 grenade. My dad says he got it in the 1980s from a surplus store. I was wondering if it is real or a repo.

Its just rust and it seemed to look a lot like the the grenade to the left in this photo:

There is also a small m above the rfx, what does that mean?

Blue paint indicates a training grenade. Surplus stores used to have all kinds of 'em.

Looks like a Practice M2 Grenade.. It would have had a small puffer charge inside the body..

These have been much copied as it is very easy to make a mould off an original grenade body, hence you cannot go off any impressed markings etc.. The mousetraps are usually range pickups and as long as the cap and charge has gone, should be OK..

Originally the real M2 was filled with rifle powder and had an igniferous fuze. The idea was that it would burst rather than detonate and give a better fragmentation pattern, as cast iron tends to go to dust when filled with HE. It was decided later to fill them with TNT as it gave a better blast effect. The fuze was changed for a detonating one, and the grenade was issued fuzed, sealed in a tin can...

"...make a mould(SIC) off an original grenade body..." Never in 40 plus years have I ever seen repro grenades anywhere at any time. It's not worth the time and effort.

Surplus stores, outdoor stores and paintball type shops are filled with them. Easy to find...look online.

It has a faint RFX on it, there all over the internet. Most are made to look like Mk2's, but I've found a F1 as well.

Well, in forty years in EOD I have seen plenty...! Clearly it is worth the effort for someone..

I would suspect most of them come from China!

Tons of training stuff from the era WWI and WWII and well like the "Real" stuff it can be counterfeited and or repop/reproduced unfortunate.. I generally have no issues with them look good paperweight use desk decor
