I believe Saginaws will maintain a higher collector value due the fact that Inland manufactured more M1
carbines than anyone else. As far as quality, they are pretty equal as they were both made to military specifications and you can swap parts from any of the manufacturers into the guns of the other manufacturers. I would recommend that once you find a carbine you are interested in, post some pictures of it and some details (serial number range, barrel markings, etc) on this site. There are several very knowledgeable persons on this site who can then advise you reference that specific rifle. Hope that helps!

And remember there are two different Saginaw Gear. One Saginaw Gear in Saginaw, MI ( S. G. )and the other Saginaw Gear in Grand Rapids, MI. ( S" G". ) Same company but considered to different makers.

Ruth's book "War Baby" has the best write up of any. The S'G' (ex Irwin Pederson) was given high praise by the Ordnance Department. That said most USGI M1
Carbines are a mix of different manufacturers (my Inland has IP, IBM, QHMC, and Post War rebuild parts). Find one in good shape, with a nice muzzle and stock and be happy.

If you are looking for a reasonably priced original carbine you'll look for either a Winchester or an Inland 1944 vintage. Look for a type 2 band. A lot of these guns sat in a warehouse until they were sold in the 60s to civilians through the NRA. Many are uncorrected and have all matching parts. Any good M1
carbine today on the West coast is $1000+, That is good condition with good barrel, decent wood, uncorrected.

Look for an UN-QUALITY OR IRWIN-PEDERSEN. They're rare so don't expect to find one in areas where Carbines are rare. Adjustable sights hide the names so people here find them for normal prices sometimes because sellers don't know.
In countries other than the USA
those makers don't matter like they do in the USA. UN-Q and IP are at a higher level of interest than most Carbines.
For ordinary Carbines Rockola is higher demand here.

Hello TenOc,
Im sorry I didnt get you, 2 questions:
- UN-Q and IP are the most rare even than RockOla?
- What do you mean about RockOla is an ordinary carbine?

I have a couple but not nearly the level of expertise that most of the other participants here have. Most of what I have learned came from information I picked up from other contributors on this site.
