The other guys first 1917.
Attachment 119556
My next project showed up today. A mixed up 1917 ‘sporter’, I use that term loosely as I think its a semi finished sporter. Bubba got distracted. The action is a Remington but it has some eddystone E’s on it but it’s in a mostly unmolested Winchester stock [some sanding but not cut off]. Serial number is 87619. Barrel date is 1-8 but I think it’s 1-18 with a very faint 1. All the steel military pieces have been removed from the action forward and a Williams ramp sight base has been screwed into the bbl. I’ll have a visible screw hole to fill in when it gets parked, the other screw was in the key slot so the sight will hide it. The sad thing is that the tips of the rear sight’s ears have been ground off?? I don’t know if they can be replaced. I removed the Williams base and installed an upper band and a correct front sight which went right on nice and tight. I also tore the bolt down and swapped the killer mainspring out with a spare cut spring from an ‘03 or Krag
. Really big improvement. The bore has good rifling but is dark. Cleaning is definitely required. As soon as the rain breaks this weekend I’ll try shooting it. The handguards are a mismatch so I’ll have them to mess with along with a stock refinish. Might recut the grasping grooves.

Houston we have a problem. My Remington bolt is a .303 bolt not a .30-06 bolt. Thought there was something odd in the way it felt but as this is my first 1917 that I’ve ever cycled I didn’t know. Waiting on a response from the seller. My question to the forum is will the parts on my .303 bolt work on a .30-06 bolt if the seller doesn’t have a complete correct bolt? Always something.

A few parts may work, but I've read that even the firing pins had different size tips.

The seller was very amenable and is going to reimburse me for a ‘06 bolt and extractor. Found a nos extractor and nos USMC bolt. The other bolt parts should work ok. My firing pin is supposed to be correct for the 30-06. So I’m going to hang on to it and do the rebuild. Waiting on the parts now so hopefully I will know something by the weekend.

Per the book by C. R. Stratton:
The 1917 firing pin is .075 dia. The P14 (.303) pin is .055. Don't use the .303 pin in the 1917; you will pierce primers. Measure the firing pin to see what you have.
The firing pin spring is 37 coils, 5.5 inches long and .40" diameter for the P14 (.303). The 1917 spring is heavier with 35 coils of .05" wire, and .42" dia. The springs are NOT interchangeable.
The cocking piece, extractor collar, and bolt sleeve are interchangeable.

I received my nos 1917 bolt and extractor but it still wasn’t right, after a few tries got one of my light loaded BAMM lead ‘06 loads to fire only to discover that the darn rifle has been rechambered to 300 win mag, 308 norma or something crazy like that. Back to the drawing boards, I’ll see what the seller wants to do tomorrow.

I'd send that one back and start again with a complete M1917 from a known source. They're still out there.

If you are not sunk in too deep money wise already, CMP
still has new 1917 barrels

This thread has me banging my head in frustration for you man. So out of curiosity I took my 1914 Eddystone bolt and put it in my 1917 Eddystone gun. The bolt would not even close.
Are you positive it was a 1914 bolt. For me it would go all the way in but once I tried to turn the bolt down it would not budge. Just trying to help trouble shoot. Good luck.

When he said the chamber had been changed to a magnum, that opens all sorts of mods being done. The bolt face needs to be opened up and perhaps the magazine box altered and feed lips at the bottom of the receiver. There's no way I'd keep that one now. Send it back and start with a correct rifle.
