I understand they are still building 7.62mm NATO M1
trophy rifles at NSWC Crane, IN.

The Navy has an inventory of M1
rifles at NSWC Crane that are awarded to Navy service members for coming in first (7.62) or second (30 cal) at certain matches the service members compete at. They are not match conditioned firearms.
The aforementioned rifles and others owned by Sailors can be taken to the Navy van when it is on the road and there, time permitting and provided they have the parts the rifle can be put into match quality condition.
I should have mentioned they are not building the rifles, they are already on hand in servicable condition. We do have quite a bit of repair parts but they are not used to create new rifles. The Navy van goes on the road equiped to repair whatever service rifles or pistols are used in the competition.

When the Marine Corps began receiving M14
's the Navy began receiving the Marines M1's in their inventory. I know Navy Boot camp used piles of Garands in the early 60's through the early 1970's. Perhapos 1972 -73. Then as the Marines began receiving the M16's all of the Marine Corps M14's went to the Navy. I thnk the Navy 7.62mm (sleeve) program ran from 1964-66, when the Navy began buying a large lot (60,000?) 7.62mm barrels from Springfield. I had a buddy who was a Chief in the Navy and was a Boot Camp instructor. He loved the 7.62mm Garands and remembered them quite well. Very little published on this topic, a pity.

I got out of boot camp, SD, Dec. 24, 1971. We shot the M1
Garand. Guarded the clothes line with '03.

I got out of boot camp at SD in March 1959, same drill as you fired the M-1 and lived with the 03. You inspired me to try to remember the 16 count manual. I seem to br missing a few moves.

I checked out a Match M-1 in 7.62 from the Subic Bay Naval Base Armory in 1975. It was a match rifle. One day deal. Match I was supposed to shoot in was cancelled.

I believe the Garand
was removed from active duty at Naval Facilities (small shore stations) in 1976. I did research a couple years ago and even had the Op Ord reference. I can't remember for sure if that Op Ord was Navy wide or just for Nav Facs but beileve it was Navy wide. A disastrous Vista upgrade ate that reference, the hard copy is filed (hopefully) amongst a thousand other papers in stacks in the basement, and my brain is reverting to primal ooze so I can't be sure. I know they were in use in '64 and M14s in use in the 80's.
