Looking to possibly convert a regular infantry M91/30 to a PU sniper

How hard would it actually be to accomplish? I can't really afford an authentic PU sniper atm but I have contacts in the former Eastern bloc that can source me the bolt, scope and scope mount for a decent price. So as stated above, is it difficult to convert the rifle? Should I just save up and get a PU? They are getting quite expensive up here in Canada. I should of bought one a few years ago when they were cheap enough...

Ten years ago, I would probably encourage you to go for it.
These things are drying up. Com-bloc stuff in general, really. (I’ve been thing about a Soviet SKS for a while and YIKES).

Buy a really sniper and leave yours alone. I know this isn’t what you asked…but there it is haha.

There are so many fakes out there that I bet you can find a good one if you start looking. The trick is to convince the owner that you know that it is a fake and then start the negotiations from there: Rifle = $350-400, replica scope = $250, etc. I did see a fake sell for $1,500 at my local gun store about a year ago. When I went to look at it, the gun shop employment allowed me to examine at it but informed me it had been already sold. When I informed him it was a fake, he couldn't believe it. I think he was pretty happy that he made a good profit on it!

I agree with Singer Do not go an ruin a un molested rifle. There are so many converted one out there to buy at a reasonable price. I have so many youing guys coming into shop to have scopes put on military rifles. i now refuse to drill an tap any of them an explain why. the same reason as stated here.

Well, perhaps the days of these being sold by the crate or out of the crate are drying up. I see 91/30's everywhere, and every one is overpriced for the last ~2 years. The problem is paying what they are worth right now. Take a look at gunbroker...hundreds of 91/30's for sale, almost all with 0 bids because there is a ridiculous minimum price. I hate to say it, but gunbroker is probably the best bet for finding a fake that sells as a fake. I see one on there now with 25 bids at ~$500 right now.

Another option is to find one that's been worked on, but if the barrel was shortened it'll be be hard to find another. I have a fake PU that I'd love to find new barrel for. Waiting for the right donor rifle to come along for the swap (but not a pristine unmolested rifle...I have one of those and it will stay as is).

I made one up by myself with no problems and I only have a hand drill. Back when I did it, the cost of getting it drilled and tapped was double what I paid for the rifle so I figured, no big deal if I messed it up. I had no problems. Today I kind of wish I had just gotten a real one but I still have it, it looks good, isn't anywear near authentic. It's a fairfield scope and mount. Probably photos of it on here somewhere. This was years ago when I first joined.

You can, of course, find a rifle that was once a sniper then converted back to an Infantry rifle. I run across them all the time, and converted a couple back to sniper config...receivers will already be drilled for the mounts.
Tula ex snipers will be marked 'CH'above the star, Izhevsk ex snipers will have a six digit number stamped into the left side of the barrel.
