Plainfield M1 Carbine
Hello to all
I need some advice please. I obtained a Plainfield paratroop model (at no cost) which has a rail fitted (now removed) Attachment 120612Attachment 120613which had the original Weaver Red Dot fitted. I only require a metal rear sight but this carbine does not have any dovetail. Any suggestions.
Paul

Here's the thing that might go on and actually be high enough to work... Ruger 10/22 Adjustable Aperture Sights TSR200 - Tech Sights

Your options are limited. You can make or have made a "rail" to replace the one for the optic and use a rear sight with screws or have a dovetail milled into it for a dovetail sight. Or you can "bite the bullet" and leave it as you got it. Personally IMO a red dot isn't a bad thing to put up with. The last thing you want to do is weld on the receiver. That isn't a very good option.

Jim, Are you saying that Plainfield did not make a paratrooper Model? Yes they did, the Model PM 30P.

Thanks for the answers. Could someone advise exactly what "base" was on this carbine that catered for the dovetail? I cannot see any grinding etc that shows anything was removed.

I don't know what base was originally intended, but you could measure the hole spacing, and then look up a Weaver base spec. chart to see what would work. If it came to it, holes can be drilled in a base to match the receiver.

That is really strange. In W5USMC's post, you can actually see a dove-tailed slot with Type 3 rear sight installed yet PFerrari's photos show no dove tail slot or even a rise on the rear receiver for the slot.

The original in all pictures I've ever seen (and I still have the original instructions for my first Plainfield (which has a section cut out for warranty registration) carbine) and it shows a picture of a "Paratrooper" with a standard M1
Carbine rear sight and receiver. I'm guessing some one had the top milled and the dovetail removed. Plainfield may have made it like that but I doubt it. Putting it back is more trouble than it's worth IMO, but it's your gun and your wallet.

I am a bit confused as the rifle definitely does not show milling marks and seems to be a totally flat receiver when compared to a normal M1
. I do not think it would look like this if the entire raised section was milled off-seems to be a different shape. Anyone know if Plainfield produced this type which would suggest a model designed for a scope / red dot mount.

And I have now discounted putting an iron sight on the carbine. Would be good to know how it came out the factory and try duplicate.
