I was reading Blind Mans Bluff on the nuke subs and the things they got up to stalking the Russian subs and cables its a good read. They seemed to agree now after the statute time limit has elapsed that Scorpion was sunk by a hot torpedo apparently due to the batteries they had in the Mk 37 fish.

Anyway thats not the snippet the one that caught my eye was when the battleship New Jersey (BB-62) was scooting across to VN for support duties she was in the cross hairs of a Soviet submarine.
Had the capt of that nuclear Russian submarine received the order to sink her he would have put her into Davey Jonse's locker.

So there you go an unknown at the time narrow squeak for one of the best battleships ever designed.

and loaders familiar with the 16 inch guns

RCS-- I remember that quite well as the Navy had to bring long retired gunnery chiefs back into service to teach the younger "kids" how to load and shoot the 16" guns.

Not to engage in oneupmanship but I have been on aircraft carriers when they were overflown by Soviet TU95 Bear bombers on several different deployments. Part of the Great Game... The ships would always launch the two Alert 5 birds and they would tuck right in, ostensibly to ram the bomb bay if the doors ever opened. They didn't.

Presumably it could all be relearnt again. The question would be if large calibre naval guns were adopted again how much or how little would the design of the gun and turrets change from the past.

Another part of the submarine spy game and just as interesting with escapades is the NR-1 the USA's smallest nuclear sub it's reactor was the size of a normal domestic oven they had quite a few escapades in that thing as it could out dive in depth every known naval submarines on the planet.
They did have a lively time in it at one point plunging into a crevasse, its been a long time since I read the book but think they went well past 1850 feet the hulls roundness in being built had to be held to within 1/16th of an inch, it also had wheels built into the bottom of the hull so it could run along the sea bed!
