Was a time I used to buy it by the quart from a Soviet
emigre. Great stuff, the way he made it. As such things do, eventually it became a shadow of the original. I suppose he farmed out the cooking to family member, or some such. Haven't run into it's equal since.

Russians marching to the front lines 1914
Here is a photo to go with your mess tin, it shows some Russian
soldiers resting while on their way to the front lines in 1914.
