We've had this one before...here... US soldier digging foxhole with helmet during training exercises. '3-27-44. Paik. S/Sgt. Benedict C. Rodel from Olivia, Minn. That's what I liked about the M1 steel pot. It had it many different uses: You can shave in it, Soak your feet in it, cook your meals in it, boil water in it, use it as a pillow, barf in it, and poop in it.
I remember another use. The steel pot can be used as a base plate for a 60mm mortar when filled with dirt.

I'd get my hair cut right off during summer so when we went out I could wash my head in a helmet full. Made a big difference at days end...

Pls tell me fjruple that pooping in it did not give rise to the phrase Sh*thead when someone forgot to empty it and in an alarm dumped it on their bean.
That would be hilarious to witness not so if your next to them in the fox hole

Can't see that happening... I did see a guy take a dump in a hole in the bottom of a trench once though. That was disappointing...

Seems to cast some doubt as to the utility of the spade in the background. Or the ingenuity of the USGI. or both.

That is the ingenuity part. Don't think it would take for most folks long to figure it out that that pot is a lot closer to a pail than the tiny shovel. Especially when the lead was flying.
