Just when I thought I'd seen it all....

I bought this St. Etienne manufactured Mle1892 M16 carbine this morning with the intent of putting it back to it's original configuration. It wasn't until I saw it first hand the 'weirdness'.
It's a sporter, and I figured someone quite a while ago tried to make a compact hunting rifle out of it. And they did. Right down to a handmade sliding safety for it. Oh, by the way, it's made from an old rifle rear sight leaf.
Does it work? Sure does, really well.

Well, you can still key a piece of older walnut in there and make that gone, or do you change the wood? Is that even available?

I have the parts, but I haven't taken this thing apart yet to see how this was done. I mean it clicks and everything, haha..
You can see the increments on it. It definitely was a rear sight leaf at one point. It's genius, I'll say that.

Of all the rifles one could sporterize why choose one of those?

Unless perhaps some doughboy's WWI souvenir he had an emotional attachment to?

With a proper cocking piece half-cock would have been an option; or was it on these?
