Unknown arsenal code
Can someone clue me in to a code found on a American Legion 1903 with
AOD stamped on the scant stock. SN is 3,096xxx, Remington, with a SA
11/44 barrel. I asked this question on the old CSP
forum with no response.
Hoping for some results this time. The post has 6 1903's that have scant
stocks with 1923 slings and AOD stamped on the left side of the stock.
First post on this new forum and looking forward to some good info. Thanks

American Legion with '03's? I thought all '03's were recalled and Garands issued?

This post used 03's in the 50 & 60's. The post then hybernated for 35-40
years. We found 6 03's, some with missing bolts, rear sights. All had 1923
slings and scant stocks with AOD arsenal stamp on stock. Most are mfg.
prior to the 800,000 SN. Still looking for that arsenal location. Thanks

I believe it means that your rifles were refurbished at Anniston Army Depot (AOD) in Alabama.

CORRECTION: From its opening circa 1940 the Army Depot at Anniston, AL, was known as the Anniston Ordnance Depot (AOD). It was renamed the Anniston Army Depot in the early 1960s. HTH

Riesch's 5th ed. book shows "AN" as code for Anniston. This is found on
pg. 179. I gave Anniston some thought, but AOD just doesn't seem to fit.
Anymore thoughts or ideas. As I remember all these AL 1903 stocks had
the AOD stamped on the stock. Thanks for the replies, keep 'em coming.

"AOD" is the overhaul inspection stamp of the Anniston Ordnance Depot and "D" is the inspector's last initial. Anniston's overhaul inspection stamp was changed to "ANAD" when the name was changed to Anniston Army Depot.
Hope this helps.

John Beard
and Bolo Badge, I tip my hat to you two guys. AOD, Anniston
Ordnance Depot, fantastic. I've been looking for this answer for a couple of
months now and you two solved it in 24 hours. Thanks, big time. hammer51
