Not as bad as the later 106mm Recoilless... ran a range for it once, the standard show for visitors was to pile empty ammo boxes 20 yards behind it, fire the gun --- a cloud of splinters!

My room mate was 106 Pl and I was Mortars so we were always on the adjoining ranges same time. They were always a great lightshow at last or first light...or when we fired illum.

Mortars
My first assignment was a Mortar Platoon (OK, Weapons Platoon)... adjusting mortar fire was like the greatest video game ever
