Savage No. IV Mk I...extra part after disassembly- help!

    Hello again!
Hoping for some guidance (again!) on one of my newly acquired surplus items.
This is a Savage No. IV Mk 1*.
I took it apart, cleaned it and lubed it and reassembled it.
Thought I was good to go...until I noticed this small leather(?) washer on the floor at my feet. I do not recall taking it off during dis/re-assembly.

Looking at the parts schematic...I see three possible matches...but 2 look like steel (#6 and #29) and #5 is NOT called out on this parts diagram. Any help identifying my mystery part would be appreciated.

Also, while I am here...which is the correct to route the sling? With the open portion of the hooks facing the rifle, or facing away?

    Thanks in advance.
    Mike

Looks like it's the bushing that goes on the screw inside the butt stock.

The leather washer is No5. Stops the oiler rattling on the stock bolt. The hooks go out stops the furniture getting gouged.

Just for correctness (there is a lot of confusion over Lee Enfield part numbers) it should be written as :

    No4 Mk1*

There are very similar part numbers / names but for totally different items, ie

    Rifle No1 Mk3 and Rifle No3 Mk1
Regularly (mistakenly) reversed and for totally different models of rifles.
Mine are not the best, but they are not too bad. I can think of lots of Enfields I'd rather have but instead of constantly striving for more, sometimes it's good to be satisfied with what one has...

Regarding the sling; image No.2 is correct.
The lower butt sling, (as shown in your image) should have the shortest amount of adjustment possible with all the excess on the upper sling swivel.

For marching and parade drill the sling will be adjusted so it has no slack in it, for weapons training it will have enough slack to be slung on the shoulder if necessary.
    Mick
