Greetings.
I recently acquired a JG Anschutz Sport Modell single shot .22 LR serial number 32xx. I believe it is a WW2 German training rifle with perhaps a beech wood stock. The receiver is...
My thanks to all for helpful thoughts and suggestions.
The owner is looking to me for that advice. As an heirloom, I'd want to deal with the rust before it gets too serious. As an asset, at least in the short term, I might leave it alone.
Hello. I am in temporary custody of a PO 8 byf 42 marked Luger with matching numbers throughout. It is a vet bring-back from WWII. When I learned that it had not been oiled in years and was being...
With the front sight centered, my group was on the left edge of the target. This morning, I drifted the front sight to the left and shot the rifle at 50 yards off of sandbags . The results are...
Wow. I appeciate the passion. In the hope that it might cool what appear to be some vitriolic sentiments, please know that I did not turn the rifle over to an amateur and he would certainly not...
Thanks for the suggestions regarding a scope.
I took the rifle out and tested it. The adjustment my gunsmith did helped with the windage. The front post is now centered and the group is only a...
Have been away for awhile. My gunsmith has returned the rifle after recrowing the barrel (which he described as suspect) and screwing in the barrel a bit...perhaps explaining the severe wind drift...
The proof stamp is 19.5 tons per square inch.
I took some of the furniture off. There is a folded piece of paper between the barrel and the front hand guard that I assume was placed there at some point for some barrel pressure or a loose hand...
Rerettably, I believe you are right. Ignorance was bliss! I got the magnifiying glass out and there is a small spud on top of the M. But, it is good to know what it is and who made the bayonet. ...
I don't think this one is a fake as it came through one of the large C&R purveyors. I am still wondering if the M on the rifle and the M on the bayonet are indicative of Maltby.
Thanks for the information. Would the M that is between the G and the R on the bayonet be linked to the M on the rifle? Would Singer Machines have designated a bayonet for Maltby by marking it with...
Several years ago, I purchased a 1944 oil-soaked, wire-brushed, dark-bore, "ishy" screw No4Mk1, condition somewhat less than advertised. I assume the M on the receiver socket stands for Maltby. It...
Indeed it is, Sir. I had to drift the sight way over to get it anywhere close to center. I have a '42 Long Branch that has the same afflicition but not nearly to that extent. On the Savage, the...
Thanks, Badger! Do you work all the time?
Thanks to all for the information provided. Very interesting. One more question...and I apologize if it is a FAQ. Approximately how many No4Mk1 snipers were built up (scoped and unscoped)?
I asked Badger to host some more pics for me here ... :)
jmoore,
It looks like a five groove barrel. The front sight is solid (and a good bit off center). I have not removed the furniture and am somewhat reluctant to do so because it seems to shoot...
Thanks to all for the feedback. I'll try to get some more pictures on board tomorrow (with Badger's kind assistance, of course).
Here are the results from my range visit. So it's only 50 yards...but I'm happy! Given my aging eyes and bifocal glasses, I'm sure it is much more accurate than this.

I emailed Badger pics and he put them in this thread for me ... :)
My apologies...my "old" digital camera is not up to the task of taking close-up pictures to show the markings. It is, nevertheless, marked as described. I did notice another mark: an R is stamped...
Thanks to all for the feedback. It is much appreciated. I'll try to post some pictures.
A friend sold to me a No4MK1*"sniper." Please help me verify that it really is one.
The story is that he got it some 46 years ago from a friend of the family that was a WWII vet and gun collector....
