Caveat they didn't throw parts in flight away. Unless it was a safety issue. Caveat they didn't stay in order in flight. Imagine making bolt bodies. Dump them in a cart. Wheel it over to the...
M-1892 safeties. High and low pin. Then we get to the devil's in the details. "Chamfer rear or no chamfer?" "Chamfer front or no chamfer?"
Warning that there are multiple parts in the bolt,...
No problem. Mind if I break out the crystal ball and fabricate a history for your rifle? A real crystal ball isn't clear glass - it's more yellow/green. Fireflies inside. Little liquid tray for...
Altogether possible. Just not done in the fashion claimed above. How sure am I of that? "Real sure."
Do the two seem at odds? No. Mind if I digress into the M-1892s for a moment?
Made at...
Three posts in a row. I'm a post bot. It's an interesting gun though. More of post number #1 expanded.
I have #230. That one is so early that it has the maximum of numbered parts. Reasons in...
Both of the above statements are incorrect. Page 262 in the good book should make one immediately suspicious of the above statements.
Both of the above statements have a kernel of truth. Which...
The rear sight isn't an early 1896.
I'll give you some unsolicited advice. Due to suggestions and the direction the thread it taking. You really have three options, one of which is "bad" and two...
Well isn't that something? You're all missing it aren't you? Pictures of that front sight, taken from the side, would be really useful.
I'll be darned but that is very likely the receiver/barrel...
Browning and Blueing are the processes - not the end result colors. Browning results in a color most would call "blue." The third process used is called "blackening."
Barrels on Krags and...
No, it is browned. Browning and blueing are two different processes. Similar but they use different chemicals. Some parts were blued and some parts were browned. That receiver has been...
Serial indicates 1896 carbine. What "refinish" means is always open to question. "Not much" as a rule unless it's particularly egregious.
There are three.
I hate to be a wet towel but the gun is refinished. 10th picture, action open, shows clear re-browning line at the front.
It is a very nice rifle.
Rifle
1892. Very expensive. Largest of the reports.

No. The serial isn't "out of range" but it doesn't prove it's a genuine carbine either.
The stock, rear sight, and other parts are wrong for an 1898 carbine. Thus it's up to you to "prove"...
Oh, that's not all of it. The XXX has been changed also. As has the XXX and the XXX.
No problem.

The part that is mildly amusing is I have a significant number of original...
There is no such thing as a 3 digit 1896.
1892/1896. An 1892 altered to 1896 format. Those exist of course.
Can't just swap the rear sight if it's a model later than the 1896 - the handguard...
Serial?
There are some issues outside of the sling swivels on that gun. Provide serial, either via post or PM, and I'll tell you what they are.
Coincidences being what they are an 1898c...
1896 rifles with correct and clear cartouches are much more scarce than most would think.
If not sold let me know and I'll take it. My kid lives in Milton so it'd be a short trip.
"24" with the original front sight"
Rifle barrels were 30". Carbines were 22".
I can't even imagine what "faking a Krag" would cost. The guns were massively over-finished. They're works of art. "They don't build them like they used to" is particularly apt in regards to Krag...
The serial number would be of use for my study.
I got distracted doing other things.

Hurt not to get a bid in there. That is what you need. Just one.
