As CiD stated, it's a common Remington mark. I've seen a few examples, as well.
My Remington Model 512 has that stamp, too; it's date-coded March 1947 ("A S S" -not an insult; that's the date...
Thank you for the replies, gentlemen.
Hello All,
Were Remington 03-A3 rifles always placed in a stock at the time of manufacture?
I realize a complete, war-time 03-A3 rifle would be in an S-Stock...
Were any barreled receivers left...
I agree! :D
I'd be proud to own it!
A nice example of what it is -& isn't!
Jason,
That's a great-looking rifle... I agree: Nice score!
I have one very similar, 35 thousand rifles & 1 month later. My barrel is correct for the serial number & is dated 5 - 18, with an "A"...
Rick,
I looked again at the "H" and I scrutinized the remaining surface area; nothing there at all. The "H" is evenly & clearly struck.
I suppose it may have been intended to be marked as an "H 1"...
I've referenced Vi Shooter's/John Beard's tables & can't locate a couple of bolt markings I've come across:
A) "H" on underside of (straight-handled bolt) safety lug; and
B) "U" on underside of...
USP,
To reiterate what Mike D asked...
Please post a full-length shot of your rifle.
Thanks for the many detailed pics... It looks like a fine rifle, with an interesting past.
-Bill
Of course...
Thanks for clarifying that.
Well, I just realized the sight leaf I had in mind doesn't have the volley notch...
So much for wishful thinking!
Thanks just the same.
Chuck,
In your estimation, would a color case-hardened sight be from a rod bayonet rifle, then?
TIA, Bill
Thanks, RCS.
That appears to be niter blue -not color case-hardened.
Now that I think about it, maybe I'm confusing the finish with the fact that RIA rear sight bases have an "H" for "Hardened"...
Maybe I'm missing something here but, if that which you collect causes you to worry, why collect it to begin with?
I collect what I enjoy; that's the point of having an avocation. Isn't it?
If...
IIRC,
Color case-hardening is correct for RIA leaf sights. I can't locate the source but, I seem to recall that being right.
*Yes, this thread is a little dated; just hope this might still help.
A good start would be:
"The Springfield 1903 Rifles"
by Lt. Col. Wm. S. Brophy
It's out of print but, can be found with a little patient perseverance.
My 2 cents...

I was pleasantly surprised to find this inside my newly-purchased "Springfield 1903 Rifles"...

It reads:

JC,
Nice between-the-wars M1903!
Thanks for sharing the pics; looking forward to seeing more!
Mike,
Is the rifle yours?
If so, can you post pics?
(I have a chromed "OL 1943" bayonet; one day, I hope to find a good parade rifle for it.)
-Thanks but, that doesn't work.
Thanks for the bbl date/ser. no. info.
For those of us viewing this thread via a small screen, what is the serial no./bbl date, please?
Thank you.
Nice representative rifle, CC!
That's interesting about Sears, too. I had never heard that before but, maybe since I'm not yet 50.
-Bill
Thanks, Rick. Not to hijack the thread... I've observed (via Vi Shooter's serialization chart & elsewhere) that some dates are found much less frequently than others. i.e. In the final year of the...
This is nothing more than curiosity but, what month is your 1918 (SA?) bbl, Rick?
Yes, please post some pictures when you can. We'd enjoy seeing what you have!
