Got it....yes it has been broken but it can't be removed. This is the first early Winchester that I have actually touched and didn't know what the pin was for. I did not see the hammer pin installed...

That's is not a punch mark, it's a ding. I don't know what to make of the other mark under the rear sight, under magnification it looks like small dings in a line.
I'm real busy tomorrow but will disassemble for internal soon. Thanks for the comments.
PI found this one for me. This is one from the first block SN1049220 and I waited a long time for it. The OC cartouche is on it's side and the SN is a mess but all the parts seem correct. ME is 1.5....
