martin08,
Thank you very much for your evaluation and explanations.
Regarding the date of manufacture, I could only narrow it down to 1918-1919 from online sources. I notice your October 1918...

BD,
Thanks for the reply. I don't recall ever seeing a number stamped along side the "UNITED STATES PROPERTY" stamp under the barrel. Have you? And haven't ever noticed that tiny Ordnance stamp...
I have a Colt 1917 with three sets of serial numbers.
The Colt SN is on the frame inside the crane, on the crane itself and inside the side plate.
The U.S. Army No. is on the bottom the grip frame....

I would very much like to hear the results of the new owner's first trip to the range firing 7.62x39 in this. No expert here, but I've never seen a Vz52/57...
V'nice looking scope, but several other things don't appear quite correct.
Opinions?

I found this Sporter at an Astro Hall gunshow in early 1993. I didn't know too much about them, just enought to recognize it as possibly something special. I noted the hand engraved SN on the bolt,...
I was asking the same question a couple of years ago. Got some good information here.

Claven 2,
I had the same problem: a Southpaw with an AR180B, and no available ambi safety.
Solved the problem a bit differently. I ordered the standard ambi AR15 safety from Armalite in order...
Gentlemen,
Thank you all for your contributions and comments regarding the Savage Mk1*. It adds a lot to making an old rifle more interesting.
Thank you, Badger, for getting me started on this...
I noticed the inspectors stamp on the buttstock of the Savage from the Knowledge Library (images 93 & 94). It appears similar to and is oriented the same as one of the two stamps that are present...
jmoore,
Both upper hand guards are Savage marked and have the last four digits of the SN penciled in underneath.
Only the forestock, barrel bands, barrel and, I just discovered, the rear sling...
Roger,
There is no serial number stamped on the forearm. Only the marks shown in the two images. Inside the forearm is a small stamped number "10" reading from front to rear on a raised portion...
MJ1,
AMEN to that.
I see we suffer similar affictions.

Buffdog:
Thank you! The Long Branch stamp on the Forestock simply didn't register with me. The cocking piece is "S" marked. Sorry for the slightly blurry image. I've noticed several other...
Previous trips to the range with my Savage resulted in indifferent accuracy with handloads and surplus ball ammunition.
I discovered Peter Laidler's article on fitting the forestock on this forum...
Gentlemen,
My 1942 Savage No4Mk1*(T) is all Savage marked , including the foresight, with the following exceptions:
both barrel bands
forestock
barrel.
Both handguards have the last four...
Thank you for your comments and observations.
The donor rifle was in sad shape. The barrel had been sawn off behind the front sight and dressed with a file. The forestock was chopped off just...
I recently acquired this scope on an M47C that had been "sporterized" on a bench vice probably in the late 1950s or early 1960s. The rifle had been stored in a shed and was pretty much a total loss...
