M3 grease gun mags have a notch on the side in the reinforced part . Mac mags don't 'cause the latch is on the rear of the pistol grip and catches the rear bottom of the reinforced section .

Years ago I got out of black powder and into machine guns . I had a can of 3F or 4F left over and loaded up some .45 230 grain ball and ran it through one of my Thompsons . Worked fine .

I think he took " recoil pad " and " butt plate " and put them together to form " recoil plate " . I know the US marked British rifles had aluminum butt plates while the originals had brass .

you want to use a near full powder charge behind the ball . If you leave an air space between the ball and powder you will get an explosion . Using Crisco or other grease was to leave a " wet blanket...

As a rule from looooong ago , balls are better and much more accurate . It has to do with keeping the conicals centered in the cylinder during ramming them in .
