I'm by no means an expert, but IIRC there should be a ball bearing in that 4 o'clock hole in the receiver you mention. Some NM sights use the ball bearing and detents in the rear sight base to give...

Bob-
Thank you for the suggestion. I have taken advantage of Jim Adell's free service in the past but it will not help as he can only be able to verify if it is a trophy rifle. In this case, I know...
Would like to contact the owner of an IHC M1 Navy Trophy rifle serial number 5087250. It should be the standard 30 caliber M1 version, possibly with O- 65, 66 or 67 electo-penciled on receiver...
Hopefully someone with more knowledge will reply, but I see that the stock pictured has the very small ord stamp by the "W" which I don't think would not be on a rebuild replacement stock.
Looks like all three of the Garands in the auction have altered rear peeps.

Bob, very much appreciate the reply and info. The thought that I have something Doc McCoy worked on or even just touched part of means a lot to me.
As an aside and not to hijack my own thread, I...
This is concerning one of the Mark 2 Model 1 Grade B match rifles with the glossy finish that were awarded to Navy match winners. I've asked some questions about these rifles in a couple of other...
Rick,
Appreciate the info on it being a late EMcF as it has a mid-late WW2 wide base saw cut gas cylinder. It is fascinating how parts get mixed together over the years. Many thanks for the...
Thanks Rick, that was an expensive book too. So, no contractors. Well, at least I had the main profile for a Springfield stock correct. Is there any way to tell if this was WW2 or Postwar?
I am...
This stock came on a CMP SG HRA 4742XXX. I don't think it is HRA. My thought is that is an SA stock. There are a lot of what I think are inspection stamps on the end of the butt but I don't see...
You are fortunate to have a Breda as your first M1. I'm jealous.

I was waiting until I got home tonight to ask opinions on this stock. Guess I'm a bit late, but nice to know that at least I can spot a very poor fake LOL.

This thread is pretty old now, I appreciate the many views. Would still be interested to know if the current thought is that only the first 100 conversions were marked "7.2 NATO"on the receiver. ...
Hi Phil-
Thanks for your reply.
The engraving is just as I received it; I didn't add anything, altho' I obviously did use a china marker on a lot of the other markings. I never stopped to think...
Am posting a few photos of an 7.62 M1 I got in a CMP auction in 2004 when they offered quite a few of them. It is SA 652XXX, born June 42(if I read the chart correctly) and has a barrel dated 5/42....

Look at the Seller's item description: "Stock is stamped with reproduction inspectors stamps WRA/GHD" and then a little later also mentions a P proof stamp was used on it. So on the initial auction...
FWIW the only one I've seen was on a papered O-65 Navy Trophy Rifle...only other stamp on it was a non-serif P inn a circle.
Tom and mack-
Many thanks for sharing your knowledge. I got the LEAD rebuild as a luck of the draw in 2001. At first that silvery grey park of the barrel and receiver contrasted to the other...
Oops, guess I should have added "lack of P proof" to that first sentence regarding the first stock.
Doh!- Mike
Asking for help to identify/verify P proofs on 2 CMP rifles. The first came on one of the 7.62 rifles in 2004. The handguards on this rifle are pretty well worn walnut, the stock is brand new...
Thanks Ben (and Mr Seijas). Another new technique to store in the organic hard-drive, I love this. Plus, a reason to go to my favorite gun store; need to pick up some sight black (and anything else...
Mack-
Thanks for your input; not interfering at all. Have posted to the Mauser forum here and also on SurplusRifle site under German rifles to see if anything can be learned there. As Alice said,...
Am looking for some help regarding an oval stamp on a M1 Garand stock. The stock has a very faint SA-GAW cartouche and came on a CMP Greek return HRA, obviously not correct for the rifle. The stamp...
