If you put a real cartouche using a real cartouche stamp on a Boyd's stock, then it is the stock that is fake, not the cartouche.

Can anyone enlighten me on this rear sight base? It has a concavity going across the back. The machine marks are clearly visible. It has no markings.
RickB-- Thanks for pointing out the M. It is so obvious now. The "V" part of the M should extend below the center horizontal line in the E and it clearly doesn't.

Specifically, what is wrong with the cartouche? I have compared it to pictures in a couple of books I have and it looks pretty good.

I saw this cartouche at the range last week. The owner allowed me to take a picture of it but removed the rifle first.
