    Krag carbine questions...

I picked up a 1896 Kragicon carbine today and needed info on the rear sight, bolt cut, barrel length and stock repair...
its s/n is 349268, the barrel was cut to 19 1/4, the rear sight looks like the wrong model, the bolt has a notch cut in it and the crack in the wrist isn't weak but.... any help identifying it would be appreciated! photos attached...

Please double check your serial number, 349268 is way too high for a `96 carbine.

The notch in the cocking piece was cut for an aftermarket peep sight.

The rear sight is a model 1902 and is not correct with the `96 short carbine stock.

All carbine barrels were exactly 22" long.

Would you look in the butt trap and see how many holes are drilled in the back of it for the cleaning rods, could be 2 or 3 holes?

    Thanks
    Chuck

sn should have been 34938..... and the stock has 2 holes. Is the sight a carbine sight as standard sights seem to have lines through the numbers and this one doesn't? thanks

Much better, s/n is in the `96 carbine range.

Is your receiver stamped "1896" or "MODEL 1896"

Your M1902 sight is for a rifle. Late production M1902 sights were marked like yours.

A correct M1896 carbine sight and handguard will set you back $$$$$.

It is just " 1896 " . any idea who makes a front sight close to the original style that wrapped around the barrel? I guess I can do without the sight but I need the stock repaired if I ever plan to shoot it!

    Carbine front sight

The wrap around sight you mentioned is from a 1903 rifle used when a Kragicon rifle barrel was cut down.

An original Krag carbine front sight would look like the one in this photo. The sight base was brazed into a dove tail cut in the barrel.
