I'm reminded of some of the descriptions of combat and even some of the pictures from D-Day that show guys in the foreground diving for the dirt as they are coming under fire while guys in the background appear to casually wander up the shingle. When there is enough general mayhem going on, it appears that some people are able to narrow down their situational awareness to only their own surroundings and the incoming that effects them.
On the other hand, this could be a classic example of fire and maneuver, with the guy in the background being a part of a second group moving out to attack or provide fire support along the flank of this one,
