    Mauser Identification

First I want to say hello to the group, I have been hunting for a while to try and identify this Mauser my dad left when he passed last year. I had a gunsmith say it was a Model 91 or 92. I can tell you that the barrel was changed to a 7mm REM MAG and the stock has also been changed. I am attaching photos in hope I can get some help. Thanks in advance.

It is sad a "gunsmith" can't tell a 91 action from a 98 . Your rifle was originally a Czechicon made VZ-23 short rifle in 7x57mm . It looks to have had a later up-date to 30/06 , before it was sportered . In the original form it was a pretty rare rifle .

Thanks for the help. Looking back at my notes it was a friend of dads that said model 91/92 action. The gunsmith is the one that sold the gun when I canceled the upgrades, gave him a choice of getting the gun back or see the man. Took about 3 weeks to get the gun back. I guess there are not to many choices as to what it is since only a couple of models were produced in Czechoslovakiaicon. I guess what caused me all the problems was the scrubbing of original maker, different handle on the bolt and different trigger for the major differences. I did learn not to trust my dads friend. He tried to get me to sell him a J. Unertl scope for $100 that currently is selling about 7x that.

    Thanks again

Any recommendation on how to label this when listing it for sale? How does this sound: Sported Czechicon VZ-23 Mauser, adjustable trigger, with 7mm REM MAG barrel? What would you give as an idea for price?

As it is now, it's value is simply that of a deer rifle. No collector value at all. No chance of being restored. Sporterized Mausers typically only bring about $250-$300 at auction.

Rifle isn't worth that much. $300 is tops, but the scope is worth a ton.

I saw the same scope sell on ebay for $800 in April this year. As for the gun I had to turn down $350 just after my dad died. Had to wait and see how the estate was going to be handled. He had 2 sweet Kelbly's Bench Rest rifles, sold one for $1600, still have one for sale.

You are correct about the Columbian Crest, it is my understanding this would have been added when it was rebuilt. Is this incorrect information?
