Type 38 Stock Hunt
Hi all,
Finally got around to cleaning up my grandpa's Type 38 trophy (he lied about his age in order to join the navy, but the war ended before he made it to Japan
) and it looks like it will probably shoot well - the bolt is a hell of a lot slicker than my mosin and the rifling, though frosty, is well defined. I will take pictures once I get it assembled again.
I plan to get it checked out by someone with a lot more knowledge about this stuff (and headspace gauges) before firing, but I can already tell that I have a big problem - the stock is not safe. The piece of wood between the magazine and recoil lug has completely broken loose, and there is a nasty crack in the stock near the rear of the action.
As such, I am on the hunt for a new stock but my searches have been ineffective. Is Ebay my only hope? Are there any companies making new stocks?

Type 38 stocks are plentiful on ebay and reasonable compared to the Type 99's. If you want a new stock, check the Mauser forum for a thread about KAR98's. I posted a link to a place that makes new ones although I'm not sure if the Type 38 is one they offer. Pretty expensive though, $300+.

if the stock isn't sporterised, the first option i would look at is to repair the stock. there are a lot of how to articles and all the good advice you could need right here.
if you are not comfortable tackling it yourself, there are a number of talented people that do it professionally.
