Peep sight on Krag
Dad gave me his Krag
and through research found out it is a sporterized rifle but might have an actual carbine stock.
My question is about peep sights that were put on these "fixed" rifles. Mine has a gunsmith built rear open sight. I am checking into putting a peep on the rifle and seem to have heard that peep sights were installed without drilling any new holes into the rifle.
Is there a certain name and model of sights that were used?
I am hoping to hunt with this rifle but eyesight doesn't work very well with the open sights
Thanks
Mike

The 1901 and 1902 sights that originally came on some of the rifles are provided with a peep. They appear on ebay fairly often and may suit your purpose. I'm not knowledgeable about after market sights if that's what you need.

Swinehart,
The most common peep sights are the Pacific. They screw into the receiver where the magazine cutoff is supposed to be. There are different models, some of them have adjustment knobs and some you just loosen up, knock them around, then tighten the screws. They take a standard Lyman/redfield diopter.
The little peephole on the 1901 sight works remarkably well and is a big improvement over an open sight, especially if you are shooting from a rest. In the field I would definitely rather have the Pacific. It puts the aperature right in your face so you don't have to look for it while that buck/bull is making his getaway.
good luck

Redfield also made a no drill peep for the Krag
. I have one on my cut down rifle. You can occasionally find them on gunbroker or ebay. I paid about $80 for mine two years ago.

Thanks for the info.
I guess I'll have to start looking around. Maybe I'll be ready for next years hunt.

Here is the Redfield No Drill Krag
sight, Target Model. I think this is called the 70KT (Model 70, K for Krag, T for Target knobs). The other one is called the 102.
There are two different Krag Redfield No drill sights for the Krag. They differ in the aperature and target knob style, not the way in which they are mounted.
Also, before I forget, the Redfield No Drill sight requires the replacement of the sideplate screw. The original armory screw is 26 threads per inch (26 tpi) which is an obsolete screw pattern, very hard to find. You can find the Krag Reidfield No drill sights from time to time on eBay, however, they are usually missing the 5/8" long 26tpi mounting screw. This screw is longer than the original sideplate screw and is used to reach the sideplate hole with the sight mounted. I had a machinist make my replacement screw. In a pinch you can use a heat treated 10-24 screw, but you run the risk of deforming the 26tpi sideplate female threads.

A Krag
or Springfield band screw will work to mount the Redfield sights. They are often sold sans the screw.
