I believe it is an M8 Grenade Launcher.

I don't think the Marine with the carbine was missed by the shrapnel.

Jim,
Here you go, Guadalcanal Marines with 1903's;

No snipers but they are 1903's, I knew two Marines that were on Guadalcanal and both of them told me they had 1903's. I knew the pictures were somewhere out there.

geberl,
Guadacanal was the only action not in the pile of photos. I was expecting to see 03's of the grenadiers, but what I saw was carbines with grenade launchers! To be honest, I didn't know you could use a grenade launcher with a carbine.

I also saw some footage of Marines with grenade launcher adaptors on their carbines in Ken Burns' "The War".

Is it true many Marines didn't like the M-1 Garand
,but favored the tried and trusted 1903s?Reading an article some years back,it stated the Government had a hard time making the Marines accept the M-1!
