Smith Corona 1903A4?
OK, take a look at this auction by Greg Martin:
http://www.gregmartinauctions.com/au...px?LotID=14604
The auction company says that it was made up by the San Antonio Armory, but I'd like to know how it can be determined that it is really a USGI item, lacking any documentation. I mean, it could easily be an 03A3 that someone modified in their basement.

Why would Uncle Sam modify a Smith Coronna 03-A3 to A4 when there where a ton (thousands?) of already existing Remington 04's that already went thru post WWII rebuild in reserve? I call fakery unless there is some serious documentation on this rifle.

For what it's worth, the Army did indeed officially modify some '03-A3's into '03-A4's. But, the rifle in the auction may or may not be one of them.

i personally know of at least 3 SC that were converted to A4,s by the military.
they may or may not still be in a weapons locker.
as for the rifle in question? id have to see it up close, the ones i know of, have the serial number of the rifle stamped on the scope base.
this is known to be a traight of the converted rifles.

The January 43 Remington barrel is IMO a bridge too far. I would pass this one up.

SC or Remington?
Isn't a s/n of 3399380 too low /out of range for a Smith Corona? If this rifle has a Remington 03-A3 receiver then perhaps at least the barrel is original.

I should have read the description more closely. I merely glanced at the auction to see if it appeared legitimate, and it was not convincing.
The rifle is indeed a Remington and the barrel date matches the serial number. Thanks for pointing that out!

John I read right past the s/n at first as well. Some better photographs would have been helpful.
