Rifle now wears the correct NO BUCKL sling. Tried to post photos of US serial number and rifle w/sling but for some reason can't. US serial number is 11494.

Nice MkII*** US Contract Ross indeed.....fine stick of walnut, and a real plus finding it before Bubba sanded the stock out. Your Ross is one of the 20,000 that the US bought in late 1917 when they decided it was safe to get involved in a war that started back in 1914.It's serial is 357 over 1908 AD. The US-applied number isn't considered the serial. Foresight hood is on backwards.
Guard it well- fine piece of history.

Well I don't know about that, apparently it wasn't safe enough for the thousands of US casualities after we got involved, you think, Ray

US couldn't have got into the war in '14 of they had wanted to. All their industrial capacity was clogged with orders for France, Great Britain
, Russia
because none of THEM were ready for a war of that magnitude. The stalemate on the Western Front just made it worse.
Once they DID get involved, it was with enough manpower and enough equipment that, once they got some combat experience (which was extremely costly), Jerry very wisely decided to call it quits.
Private Roland Hart of the Newfoundland Regiment was born on November 11, 1896. When his 22nd birthday came around, he had nearly 4 years of combat under his belt, including some of the roughest actions of the War. He once told me that, "I think they stopped the War just because I'm such a helluvva nice guy. I know there was no OTHER reason to stop it; we all thought it was gonna go on forever."
Theoxrojo, you have one very pretty Ross Rifle and I sincerely hope that it shoots as good as it looks. Ross imported top-quality French
, Italian
and Rumanian walnut for stocking these rifles and it looks as if yours got one of the nicest blanks.
