I found out that it was a plainfield not fairfield. Thanks for the help. I hear these are not the greatest.

Plainfield is what I would buy if I couldn't get a G.I. carbine. Check that website Bill listed, but I think you'll find they even had contracts with gov't agencies, and that the guns have a fairly good reputation. - Bob

Early Plainfields used their receiver with all-G.I. parts. As USGI said, there were said to be gov purchases of Plainfields for covert use (no USGI markings). A few of these, or at least barreled receivers have been known to come through the CMP
, so that is the proof. That is, if you believe it.
You would have to really give it the once-over to determine what is actually there. I don't remember hearing of any problems with Plainfield receivers or build quality. If I found one for a 'shooter' carbine I'd grab it if the price was fair.

I had an early Plainfield for awhile that I took in on trade when I had an FFL. IIRC, all the parts were USGI except the barrel, receiver, and the stock. It was a decent little weapon. When the Blue Skies came in from Korea, I sold it off and got a nice Underwood from RSR for $119.
Those were the days. I would go do a gunshow with 6 or 8 Blue Skies and sell every one. Had a late Winchester with late features that was 99% finish that I let some talk me out of..
Back to Plainfields: If you could pick it up for $400 to $500, it would be a great deal. I certainly would not hesitate to have one as a shooter at that price, either!

With all of the surplus M1
carbine magazines available back when Plainfields were being manufactured, I wonder why Plainfield Machine Co. had new ones made. The like new sample I have is marked "PMC" high on the back above the magazine detents. The non-hold open follower is also marked.
