Both pictures bring memories to mind. Over the wall feet first gives your rifle butt a chance to catch and clock you with the barrel. That gives it the full weight of your fall to hammer you with... The second, I had my nose broken in basic being among the first in the group during one of these free for all running things. These guys look to be falling in, I was falling out. A man named Egan fell and the resulting dogpile put me under running boots and one caught me squarely under the nose. Don't know how it didn't just kick it right off my face...just one of several breaks...
    Regards, Jim

    Fort Sheridan

The photo of the 103rd Coast Artillery is from 1941.

Interesting story, After the battle of Wounded Knee in South Dakota (1890), the Sioux Indians were escorted to Ft Sheridan Il by General Nelson Miles. General Miles wanted to impress these Sioux with American civilization and arranged special entertainment including Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show. The Sioux caught the show business fever and all but four joined Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show and toured Europe and Englandicon.

The Sgt stripes and dogtag are from my father-in-law who was discharged from the army in 1928 at Ft Sheridan. (he had been promoted to Sgt Major on Sept 26, 1919 but took a reduction in rank to stay in the service after WW1)Attachment 60340Attachment 60341
