A Collector's View - The SMLE Short Magazine Lee Enfield 1903-1989. It is 300 8.5x11 inch pages with 1,000+ photo’s, most in color, and each book is serial-numbered. Covering the SMLE from 1903 to the end of production in India in 1989 it looks at how each model differs and manufacturer differences from a collecting point of view along with the major accessories that could be attached to the rifle. I've heard about these "stretcher fences" before and I'd got the idea that some came from the 6 very deep level shelters that were built adjacent but deeper to London tube stations. These deep level shelters were built in the same manner as a deep level tube train tunnels and were intended to be incorporated into the London tube network post WW2. The idea was to bypass certain stations with "express/fast" tube trains while another train could be held in the station. The idea was never taken up post WW2 but the 6 deep level shelters remain to this day, as far as I know. Ironically, I don't believe that the shelters even saw much use, if any, as air raid shelters during WW2.
