Enfield Butt Tag
Hello All,
I was at a local gun show this past weekend and a 1899 Enfield single shot followed me home.
No pictures yet but was wondering about the disc on the butt stock.
The upper left and right quadrant is stamped 11 & 99 which I assume is a date.
In the lower half is IW IB
R.G.A.
113
What comments might there be? Pix forth coming.
Thanks for any information
Gil

11.99 is a November 1899 issue date, as you surmised. RGA is Royal Garrison Artillery, 113 is a rack/weapon number. Not sure on the IW IB...a battery/unit designation of some sort, I'd guess.

It's possible, although Hampshire & Isle of Wight (H&IW) is the usual marking.
There were permanent artillery forts of the island but I would have thought these would have been manned by Coastal Artillery; unless of course Coastal Artillery came under the RGA???

I can't add any more about the butt disc markings but that's a nice looking Martini Metford Artillery Carbine.

I also have one the same. I have been told that the "NOT FOR BALL" was marked when taken off front line units and issued to the Cadet Corp and to conform this the C arrow arrow C is the markings for issue to the Cadet Corp. I thought it would be a long time before I actually saw another.
