What do you mean wood case? A 1953 SMLE MkIII* would be either an Ishapore or a Lithgow
.
$500 is about $250 too many for a gun with a mismatched bolt IMHO unless it's something really special.

There's a third possibility--
One of the BSA FTR program for SMLEs, which was done in 1953.
So, if it has a unmatching bolt--- - 1.If it's a 1953 Lithgow
, it's a good deal even with an unmatching bolt.
- 2.If it's a 1953 Ishapore, go beat $400 out of the guy who sold it to you.
- 3.If it's an "FTR 1953" rifle, make sure the bolt doesn't match and then go beat $300 out of the guy who sold it to you.

Ditto that question.
What part of the world do you live in?
$500.00 sounds to be a bit on the high end of the scale. Well actually a fair bit past the high end of the scale unless it is something special.

Well - a rifle with some history it is believed that the "Cie" is the Swiss
army/Police so it looks like its been to Switzerland.
The box sounds very unusual. It is normally only the No4 varients that had boxes. If it is a No1 box then it sounds rare - it could be just a modified No4 box - but still not a usual occurance.
Any chance of some pics of rifle and box ?
